QUOTATION OF THE WEEK
So often we try to alter circumstances to suit ourselves, instead of letting
them alter us.
—Mother Maribel
PERSONAL REFLECTIONS
Negative events and circumstances take place in all our lives and often our reaction is to try to change the event or circumstance. We may be unhappy with how something turned out or with something someone did because it did not meet our expectations. So what do we do? We try to change the "something." We may blame others or attribute it to circumstances beyond our control. We may even try to pretend it did not happen. So we avoid, make excuses, blame, run, fight and try all types of external efforts to ease our pain and make everything right.
What if we embraced those same events and looked at them as a gift that will help us learn and grow? What if we took the attitude that the only change possible is a change in us? What if we looked for changes inside ourselves instead of on the outside?
This is not easy, particularly when an event affects our physical world or when a person attacks us for our beliefs or actions. Take a moment and look at those circumstances. Yes, we have had an event that affects our physical realm, but does it have to affect our emotional realm? It may definitely seem to but in reality it does only to the extent and in the manner that we let it. Our attitudes, our reactions, our actions are just that--ours!
Recognize that "you" are in control and that "you" are the pilot and navigator of your feelings, actions, reactions, and emotions. Events can affect your life, but how you react to them is totally yours for the taking. So take it! Take it with courage and confidence. You are in control.
