Our deepest sympathy and condolences to those who suffered from the recent tragic events.

Following is the first Thoughts... message since a summer break. While it speaks of rallying together to bring peace and love into the world, it is also necessary for many to heal and express and work through their grief before this rallying can take place. Ultimately, good will prevail and emerge as a powerful force that will not allow hatred, bigotry and prejudice to rise. Never forget the power of the individual to effect change.

QUOTATION OF THE WEEK

Our work as citizens is a lot like housework. It never ends. We can either wring our hands in despair or use them to roll up our shirtsleeves and try to find new ways to make a difference.
--–Pat Schroeder, Former U.S. congresswoman

PERSONAL REFLECTIONS

We have just witnessed one of the most, if not “the” most, tragic events in our American history. The size of it is so large that it defies our being able to take it all in. It enters our thoughts little by little as we hear and see more. “Wringing our hands in despair” would be understandable and we may even need to do so as part of our individual process for dealing with things. Yet our hands must eventually be opened and reaching out in whatever way we can. Our hands joined with many others will form an indestructible force that will ultimately provide healing and a safe haven. A big challenge, yes, but the force of just one person's will has done profound things. When this force is joined with others, it forms an impenetrable bond. We see this with the hundreds of unsung heroes as they try, unselfishly, to search for the lost and heal the suffering. People around the world are rallying with prayers, money, and volunteer efforts.

Our leaders are involved in making some of the most important decisions that any leader can make. Nevertheless, the battle does not rest with them alone. The citizens of the world play a major role by “rolling up their shirtsleeves” and trying to “find new ways to make a difference.” Reason must prevail in the face of unreasonableness. Rational behavior must rise even when surrounded by irrationalness. Kindness must be given even in the storm of unspeakable acts of hated. Little acts of goodness and kindness to those in need can bring forth a power that reaches everywhere.

Reach out and help a friend, a neighbor, a stranger. Find new ways to make a difference in the world. Do not let hate prevail. Instead, join together to bring peace and love to others. You can make a difference!

Blessings and love,
