QUOTATION OF THE WEEK

History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.
--Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

PERSONAL REFLECTIONS

Is the core of evil really sustained by single individuals? Can a person perpetuate wrongs without the cooperation of "good people" doing nothing? Look at history, or just at our own environment, or if we have the courage, look at ourselves. Have we had the courage to say "stop" when we see someone doing or saying things that we know are wrong? Do we turn away with thoughts like, "I am just one person, I can't do anything that will make a difference" or "this isn't any of my business" or perhaps "they deserved what they are getting?"

Each of us knows within our heart what is right and what is wrong. Our lack of action when we know that something is wrong gives support to the wrong. It adds strength to the person and the actions. Our inaction is the fertilizer that strengthens the weeds of prejudice, injustice, pain and suffering. Perhaps we may think that by nonparticipation in an evil action we are somehow absolved from any responsibility for that action. This is a very dangerous thought process. True, many wrongs are taking place throughout the world. I am not suggesting that we take responsibility for correcting all of these wrongs--that would be impractical and self-defeating. However, we can take responsibility for creating positive change in some things. We can become aware of our environment and the events and actions caused by others. We can become an outspoken proponent of what we know to be right and good. We can make a difference. A word or action can ignite a groundswell among others who, in order for them to participate, just needed a jump start from someone.

Do not be one of those waiting for "someone else" to do it. Let it be you! Break ". . . the appalling silence of the good people" and become the leader. You will walk taller for doing so as will others.

Blessings and love,
